Time Energy Unlocks Community-Generated RECs from Malaysian Rooftops

First phase demonstrates how existing residential rooftops can become a source of RECs for corporate sustainability.

  • Home solar systems generate both electricity and associated green attributes that can be certified and issued as RECs.
  • Corporate buyers can source these community-generated RECs through Time Energy’s Green Rewards Programme.
  • Homeowners can receive additional financial benefits beyond electricity bill savings.

Shah Alam, 16 July 2026 – Time Energy Sdn Bhd, the renewable energy arm of Time dotCom Berhad, has completed the first phase of its Green Rewards Programme, a community-generated Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) initiative.

Solar photovoltaic (PV) systems generate electricity and associated green attributes that represent the environmental benefit of renewable energy generation. These attributes can be certified and issued as RECs, with one REC representing 1MWh (1,000kWh) of renewable electricity generation.

For companies that are working to reduce their carbon footprint but may not be able to fully meet their renewable energy needs on-site, qualified RECs provide a recognised way to support renewable electricity claims and market-based Scope 2 emissions reporting.

While solar RECs in Malaysia are commonly sourced from utility-scale renewable energy projects such as large-scale solar farms, the Green Rewards Programme allows corporate buyers to source community-generated solar RECs from residential rooftops instead. This supports clean energy generated by Malaysian homes while reducing the need for additional land to be repurposed for solar farms.

Residential Rooftops: An Untapped REC Source

  • Estimated 22.7GW residential rooftop solar potential
  • This spans approximately 3.9 million residential buildings in Malaysia
  • A typical 7kWp residential solar system can generate around 8–9 RECs annually
  • Existing rooftops can contribute without requiring additional land

Individually, each home generates too little solar electricity to participate in the REC market directly. Under the Green Rewards Programme, Time Energy aggregates the green attributes from participating homes, manages the REC certification and sale process, and returns the net proceeds to homeowners as Green Rewards. This enables homeowners to receive additional financial benefits from the clean energy they generate, beyond electricity bill savings, with no effort on their part.

“We are glad to have found a way to connect homeowners to a market that would otherwise be difficult for them to access individually,” said Arjun Arasu, CEO of Time Energy.

“While the current value of RECs is influenced by many moving parts across ESG and energy markets – from geopolitics to shifting government policies – we believe the contribution from homeowners deserves to be recognised. As the market develops, we hope this recognition translates into greater value,” he added.

AIMS, one of Malaysia’s leading data centre providers, was the first purchaser of RECs generated under the Green Rewards Programme’s first phase, which aggregated 1H2025 solar generation from participating Rent-to-Own customers of Emit Solar, Time Energy’s solar brand. Its purchase helps demonstrate how businesses can support distributed clean energy generation.

Chiew Kok Hin, CEO of AIMS, said: “The Green Rewards Programme is part of AIMS’ broader approach to growing responsibly and supporting sustainability outcomes across the businesses we serve. This model allows us to connect corporate sustainability action with community-level clean energy. While every effort may start small, lasting impact comes from businesses and communities working together with a shared purpose. Through collaboration, we can build on these efforts over time and contribute to a more sustainable future for everyone.”

Time Energy said that it will continue working with businesses seeking traceable, local and community-linked RECs, while expanding opportunities for homeowners to receive additional financial benefit from the clean energy they generate.
